Reardon

Fragment

I drove, then took a boat, and came here again. Once there was no road to be found here; dense greenery crowded around rippling water. Now a two-lane asphalt road stands alone by the shore. I know everything is different now. He waved his hand, signalling that we had no time, and so we went on, and did not linger. Overhead the clouds were thick; sunlight struck down through the cloud layer in pillars of light, and lit the clouds as if they were burning.

At the end of the road, firelight gradually came into view, like an egg yolk scattered loose. All around was still deathly quiet. The temperature rose; we had no choice but to take off our long gowns and throw them by the roadside.

He and I were each of us utterly alone.
